Project Overview

Last September 2023, DC Hauling Excavating & Gravel Driveway Specialists, Inc. completed a 1,850-foot-long and 15-foot-wide gravel driveway installation project with a 40×30 parking pad at the end in Hilton, Monroe County, New York.

Before installing the gravel driveway, we handled extensive land clearing activities, which included tree clearing, stump removal, and brush clearing, to create a space in preparation for the gravel driveway. We also installed three culvert pipes to manage the water flow from a creek that crosses the driveway path and a nearby water ponding area, ensuring water will not affect the new gravel driveway.

The gravel driveway was initially designed as a construction access driveway for utility company trucks, allowing them to work on the property efficiently. Now that the utility work is partially complete, the client has reached out to us to refresh the gravel driveway. We’re refreshing it it with 5/8ths crusher run stones to create a smooth, level surface.

Existing Site Condition and Challenges

Between the project’s completion in September 2023 and May 2024, the gravel driveway in Hilton, New York, experienced significant use by utility trucks and other heavy vehicles. This constant back-and-forth traffic led to several site challenges and conditions that needed addressing.

Upon inspecting the driveway, we observed some low spots, water ponding, and standing water, indicating areas of settlement. These issues are typical for construction driveways subjected to heavy use, but the driveway held up well overall, demonstrating the strength of its construction. The driveway was initially built using geotextile fabric and a 4-5 inch layer of #2 Crusher Run as the base, which provided a solid foundation.

However, certain areas, such as the site where a large 48-inch culvert pipe was installed, presented a minor challenge, strong water flow in the creek and obstructions in the flow path led to erosion risks that could affect the driveway’s integrity.

Drainage Cleanout

To ensure proper water flow and prevent erosion in this area, we will conduct a thorough clean-out of the creek and culvert pipes. Our goal is to maintain a clear and direct path for the creek to flow into the culvert pipe, preventing any potential damage caused by water accumulation and erosion.

To give the gravel driveway a smooth and level surface, we applied a fresh layer of 5/8-inch and 1-inch crusher run stone, with a thickness of 2 to 4 inches, depending on the areas that needed leveling.

We started at the end of the driveway and worked our way toward the entrance, ensuring consistent coverage.

Low spots were filled to eliminate dips and uneven surfaces, providing a smooth finish throughout. Once the new layer of crusher run stone was laid down, we carefully leveled and compacted the gravel to ensure a smooth ride back to the house.
